This country is experiencing what most experts would agree is the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression; and some would argue that it’s worse. The lack of confidence financial markets have in the government to adeptly navigate recessionary waters is astounding; and the lack of confidence that inspires in would-be investors – savers for college, retirees, or those looking to accrue enough wealth to buy a home with a big down payment – makes the sale of traditional retirement and investment products like mutual funds, asset allocation services, and advisory services practically impossible. More than ever, individuals are flocking toward conservative investments like money market mutual funds, CDs, and government bonds that they are sure will preserve principle. This trend explains why annuity retirement is becoming a much more attractive option to disillusioned savers, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a broker who has received an annuity sell order, especially for the non-variable type.

As a seller of structured investments, you are providing a product to your client that meets his or her goals that will also earn you a solid commission – usually a low single-digit percentage of the annuity you sell. As a financial planner, I know how often interests conflict. Financial product companies constantly put out incentives for me to sell this or that risky, high-margin product to a client that doesn’t need it. Annuity retirement products are a true exception in the investment community. The security and stability they offer to clients are really priceless in their eyes, so I feel as though I’ve earned my commission by giving them a product that they definitely could not structure themselves in their own portfolios.
Bottom line: for greedy but ethical financial planners and product salespeople, selling annuities – fixed or variable, leveraged or unleveraged – is a great way to help people while making a good living.

My teeth had always been a source of embarrassment for me. They were dull and discolored and had been in poor condition since my early twenties. I spent several years in a community college and ended up feeling as if I had no better sense of direction compared to when I first graduated from high school. The only difference was that now I had racked up an abundance of student loans that were weighing heavily upon my mind and scaring me into staying in college even though I knew that conventional schooling just wasn’t for me.

I wasn’t interested in any of the career options that counselors were placing in front of me. I didn’t want to go into criminal justice, I never liked math so I wanted to steer clear of any business classes, and I was not computer savvy either. I was interested in the health care profession but I knew that I just couldn’t deal with blood or broken bones. The idea of helping people to get better did leave an impression on me. And I also knew that the health care field was one of the few professions that was not affected by the declining economical condition of our country.

I talked to a couple of friends and they suggested that I look into rehabilitative healthcare professions, and one of them recommended that I look into getting a massage degree. The idea of being a massage therapist had never occurred to me before, but I was interested in learning more about it.

I did a little research and found out that I could earn my massage degree in just fifteen months. There were a number of programs in my area and I could get started right away. So I left community college so that I could stop wasting my time and get serious about a real career. I looked forward to actually taking classes that would pertain to a real career instead of amounting to nothing but a list of earned credits that weren’t going to be applied towards anything.

I enrolled in a massage degree program with more enthusiasm than I had in years. I looked forward to taking the classes, to gaining clinical experience, and to finishing the program so I could finally start a career. I was excited that I had finally figured out what direction I wanted my life to go in. It was very motivational to know that after I completed the program that I would be able to help people who had injuries or that were suffering from back or neck pain.
